Rough Sketches

posted by Zack on December 7, 2009

A lot of comic artists do very intricate rough sketches and pencils. In a lot of cases, it’s as intricate and detailed as their finished inks. (Some comic artists don’t ink but forget them for now, ok? You can remember them when this post is over).
I used to do very complicated pencils, up until very recently. I always felt like it made my art look forced. I don’t just jump in with no preliminary work but I tend to do my best work when its spontaneous. For a long time I couldn’t do that and get a ‘finished’ look in comics but now that I’m doing everything in Manga Studio, I can!

Which brings me to this. This is the rough of a panel on the next page after the one I posted. I only roughed the page out tonight, and the next step is the ‘inks’:

… and sometimes, you just nail it the first time. I couldn’t get Squire’s facial expression better if I tried.
I also think this panel reads pretty well out of context, but maybe I’m totally wrong. Do YOU know what’s going on?
